EOA Summer Dinner 2009
Kenneth Clarke MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills was keynote speaker at EOA’s 30th Anniversary Summer Dinner held at The Atrium in London on 22 June. Other speakers were Sir Stuart Hampson, President of the EOA and Charles Berry, Chairman of eaga, sponsors of the event. Robert Oakeshott, founder of the Association in 1979, was recognised for his contribution to the world of employee ownership.
The Employee Ownership Conference 2008
Just under 200 people were at EOA’s conference on employee ownership at the NEC Birmingham International in October. Delegates from co-owned companies and businesses thinking of converting to employee ownership had a choice of 19 sessions during the one-day event, sponsored by specialist advisers Wrigleys solicitors and Baxendale, the new consulting arm of the Baxi Partnership. Plenary sessions featured group discussions based on interactive ‘share and view’ technology – courtesy of co-owned organization development consultants CPCR. EOA Summer Dinner
Cabinet Minister John Denham MP and Liberal Democrats deputy leader Vince Cable MP were keynote speakers at EOA's Summer Dinner on 23 June 2008 in the House of Lords, along with John Lewis Partnership chairman Charlie Mayfield. Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities & Skills John Denham praised the employee owned sector for its record on innovation and nurturing skills development. Vince Cable called on politicians to get the 'big and rapidly growing' co-owned sector in its sights, identify blockages to further growth and help the sector tackle them.
All Party Parliamentary Group on Employee Ownership
The ‘Share Value: how employee ownership is changing the face of business’ report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Employee Ownership was launched at a reception at the House of Commons on Monday 19 May 2008 at which the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, was keynote speaker. EOA sponsors the All Party Group and is grateful to Tullis Russell Group for supporting the reception event. The report contains a number of recommendations about removing barriers to the co-owned sector’s growth.
‘Caring and Sharing’ launch
EOA launched ‘Caring and Sharing: the co-owned route to better care’, a paper by Dave Wheatcroft, at a reception at Newcastle upon Tyne’s Centre for Life on 12 September 2007. Speakers at the reception, chaired by Eaga plc director Dave Routledge, were Tim Pain, head of social enterprise and business support for One North East; Sue White, head of social enterprise at the Department of Health; Margaret Elliott, founder of Sunderland Home Care Associates; and Dave Wheatcroft, author and adviser to SHCA.
International co-owned business seminar
The challenge of developing an international co-owned business was the focus of an EOA seminar on 19 September 2007, sponsored by law practice Field Fisher Waterhouse and co-owned sustainability consultants Golder Associates. Chaired by Scott Bader group managing director Philip Bruce, the seminar was addressed by Rick Firlotte, global vice president of Golder; Martin Young, company secretary of Arup; Mike Blackburn, chairman of Mott MacDonald; and Graeme Nuttall, tax partner with Field Fisher Waterhouse.
